Calgary is an amazing city to call home with Ward 12 as one of the fastest growing and most promising.

As your Alderman, it's my mandate to work for you and the rest of Calgary by ensuring that Council is responsible with your tax dollars, by not spending where savings can be found and by managing the assets that The City owns while making the best use of those resources. It's my mandate to ensure that southeast Calgary will enjoy a direct transit link to downtown Calgary and to demonstrate open and transparent communication with Calgarians through a variety of channels.

"If you never ask 'how can we do this differently' we'll always get the same results."

Biography

Term in office: 2010-2013

Shane Keating was first elected to serve as Alderman for Ward 12 in October 2010. Born in Regina, he moved his family to the Calgary area in 1991 and has lived in Ward 12 since 1997. Shane spent 31 years as an accomplished educator, and has served on numerous community associations as both a member and an executive.

As a new member of Calgary City Council he believes in thinking outside the box and asking: "Why does it have to be that way, and how can we make it better?"

Shane currently serves on the following committees:

  • Standing Policy Committee on Community & Protective Services: Vice-chair
  • Standing Policy Committee on Land Use Planning & Transportation
  • Land and Asset Strategy Committee
  • Inter-Municipal Committee – Rocky View

Shane earned his Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Regina and his Masters of Education Administration from the University of Calgary. He spent 18 years as a school teacher and 13 years as a school administrator/principal.

He is married to Merviana. One project close to Shane's heart is the Families in Remberance of Military Members (FIRMM). Shane co-founded the group after his nephew, Cpl. Shane Keating died in Afghanistan. The group's goal is to educate Canadians about the military, and provide support for fallen and wounded soldiers.
