May/June 2012 - Alderman's Community Update

Ward 6 Open House

Thank you to everyone who came out to our open house on April 17.  The Open House was well attended and feedback was very positive.  We had 21 organizations participate, including a variety of City departments, Community Associations and community organizations. It was a fun, informative evening and we look forward to hosting another open house in the fall at the Glamorgan Community Association building. Plans for the fall open house are in the preliminary stages and we welcome any recommendations that you may have.

For updates on this and other events, please check the events page.

Traffic

Traffic along Glenmore Trail/Highway 8 has been an ongoing concern for residents of southwest Calgary, particularly during peak hours. Since this corridor is slated for major reconstruction when the southwest leg of the Ring Road is developed by the Province, we have been hesitant to undertake a major overhaul of Glenmore Trail; therefore we have focussed on identifying high value interim solutions to mitigate recurring traffic congestion at key bottlenecks. Detailed designs for a set of improvements have been developed and are ready to go to tender. We anticipate a mid-to-late summer construction start.

Grey Eagle Casino Application

The Grey Eagle Casino has an application open with the Province to expand their casino, which sits in close proximity to the Glamorgan and Discovery Ridge communities. I have scheduled a meeting with Daryl Crowchild from the Tsuu T’ina First Nation to discuss community and Nation relations.

Four Corners Stampede Breakfast

I will be there flipping pancakes and look forward to seeing many of you there. The organizers expect 3,000 to 5,000 people at the breakfast, which will run from 9:00 a.m. until noon with Centennial birthday cake being served at 11:00 a.m.

APRIL 2012 - W6 REPORT

Alderman Richard Pootmans official website

A great city starts with healthy, vibrant communities. Healthy communities bring neighbours together in a variety of ways, are safe and offer opportunities for both work and play. Of key importance in my role as your Alderman is to help residents connect with their communities and ensure that our communities provide these opportunities.

Ward 6 Open House

One way that we help residents access community resources is by hosting open houses. These events bring City Departments and local organizations together to engage citizens and display the important work that they do to keep our communities desirable and successful. Last September we had a fantastic turnout to our Ward 6 Open House, prompting us to arrange another this Spring.

Ward 6 will host an Open House at the Strathcona Community Association building (277 Strathcona Drive SW) on Tuesday, April 17, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., in which, for your convenience, a wide variety of organizations will participate. Preliminary plans are also under way to host a fall Open House in Glamorgan – a more convenient location for Ward 6 residents east of Sarcee Trail.

More information about the April Open House is available on our Ward 6 Events page.

Inaugural Remembrance Day Ceremony at Battalion Park

How exciting it is to be working with members of the Royal Alberta United Services Institute (RAUSI), of which I have recently become a member, and The King’s Own Calgary Regiment (KOCR) and a team of dedicated and highly-skilled volunteers to host the first annual Remembrance Day ceremony at Battalion Park on November 11, 2012.

The site is historically significant, with two Department of National Defence-inventoried monuments and Battalion numbers laid in rock dating back to the First World War. Battalion Park is part of what used to be known as Camp Sarcee and later the Sarcee Training Area.

Walking through Battalion Park last November, I noticed that someone had pushed poppies into the caulking on the upper cairn, an indication that there is a real desire among residents in the area for the opportunity to show their respect and commemorate the sacrifices made by veterans past and present.

Please mark your calendars for this important ceremony and join us at Battalion Park on November 11, 2012.
