Changes to Standing Policy Committees

As of January 1, 2012, The City will have a new structure for Standing Policy Committees (SPCs):

  • Transportation and Transit – planning, design and monitoring of transportation routes, traffic operations, parking facilities and public transit
  • Planning and Urban Development – land use planning and policy, development and building approvals, property assessment
  • Utilities and Corporate Services – services provided by the Corporate Services Department, services provided by the Utilities and Environmental Protection Department

The SPC on Community and Protective Services remains the same.

Council also has a new Priorities and Finance Committee. This committee takes over the responsibilities of the Personnel and Accountability Committee, as well as overseeing financial planning and reporting.

Members of 80 boards, commissions and committees provide guidance to City Council on a wide variety of issues ranging from accessibility to housing to taxis to sculpture. Every fall, and when vacancies occur, The City of Calgary advertises to fill positions on these boards, commissions and committees. Most positions are volunteer and non-paid, while some offer an honourarium. Please see the list of boards, commissions and committees, below, for more information on eligibility, length of term, meeting times, etc. City Clerk's begins accepting applications for vacancies at the end of August. If you would like to volunteer to sit on one of the board, commissions and committees, please fill out the online application (only active when there are vacancies) or contact City Clerk's at 403-268-5861. Vacancies also sometimes occur throughout the year on boards, commissions and committees.
