The Law Department

​The Law Department does not provide legal services to the public. Members of the public who require legal services are requested to call: 

The Law Department is an in-house law firm for The City of Calgary. The following services are provided: 
 
  • Legal counsel to the Mayor, City Council as a whole and its individual members, the City Managers Office and all departments
  • Preparation of agreements and by-laws, as required
  • Legal work relating to real estate matters, contracts, financing, planning and development, and other corporate business 
  • Legal services and advice relative to corporate environmental management
  • Represent The City in lawsuits and conduct all court and quasi-judicial proceedings, as well as administrative litigation such as expropriation hearings and property tax assessment appeals
  • Prosecute violations of certain provincial statutes and City bylaws as an agent of Alberta Justice
  • Attend meetings of Council and on request, committees of Council
  • Investigate, adjust, collect, and settle claims made by third parties against The City
  • Investigate, adjust, collect, and settle claims made by the City against individuals and corporations
  • Administer the placement of insurance to protect the City from risks
  • Protect City of Calgary employees, property and information
  • Investigate breaches of City policies and procedures, including the investigation of employee malfeasance
