Census Taker Information

Census Takers go door-to-door to collect Census information from households in the City of Calgary.  Census collection takes approximately three weeks and is conducted from April 1-21.  Census Taker assignments vary in size but are generally between 400-600 dwellings.

Applications are no longer being accepted for 2012 Civic Census Takers

Census Takers are provided with training and materials to conduct the Census.

To be a Census Taker, you must be:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Available to attend a daytime training session in March
  • Available to conduct Census work during the first three weeks in April
  • Available to attend a daytime check-in session in late April
  • Able to walk in seasonable weather conditions

As a Census Taker:

  • You must visit a dwelling several times to obtain the required information for the Census.  Census Takers are expected to complete return visits until the required information is collected.  We ask that Unable to Contacts not be more than 1% (4 or 6 residences per district).
  • You provide your phone number on the call back slips for residents in your assigned Census District to contact you.
  • You are required to provide a status report to the office, twice during the collection period.
  • At the end of the collection period, you must total your Census book and return it in person to the Election & Information Services office to be checked-in.
  • Your material will be reviewed by appointment at our office with our staff.
  • Payment is based on the number of dwellings in your assignment, the Census questions asked, the completion of Census forms and attendance at a training session.  Details of the payment schedule are provided to you in your appointment package.
