Revisions to ward boundaries for the 2017 Municipal General Election are necessary to address issues related to an imbalance in the distribution of population across wards.
Council gave first reading to Bylaw 25M2016 that amends ward boundaries on May 16, 2016. The new ward boundaries, once adopted, will come into effect on Election Day (October 16) 2017. A total of 58 communities within Calgary will be impacted by the changes proposed in Bylaw 25M2016.
If you would like to petition for a vote of electors on these boundary changes you have 60 days from the date of the last advertisement of the proposed bylaw to do so. The deadline for the receipt of the petitions by City Clerks is 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2016. If a valid petition as per the requirements under the Municipal Government Act, sections 221 to 226 inclusive is received by 4:30 pm on Tuesday August 9, 2016, a vote of electors would be required to accept or reject the proposed ward boundaries.
In order for a petition to be valid, it must be signed by electors equal to at least 10 per cent of the population of the city as determined by the most recent census and filed with the City Clerk’s Office by the August 9 deadline. The requirements for petitions are in the Municipal Government Act, Sections 221 to 226 inclusive.
A copy of Bylaw 25M2016 may be viewed by the public during office hours at the City Clerk’s Office Corporate Records section located on the main street level of the Administration Building, 313 7 Avenue S.E. The office hours for the City Clerk’s Office are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
