Office of Sustainability

The City of Calgary's Office of Sustainability team has the mandate to embed  sustainability within the corporation and accelerate community engagement around sustainability through the imagineCALGARY Partnership and other networks.

In March of 2010, The Administrative Leadership Team directed the Office of Sustainability to develop a 10-year strategic direction toward sustainability. The 2020 Sustainability Direction identifies where the organization would like to be in 10 years and how it is going to get there just as the business planning process identifies where our organization would like to be in three years and how it is going to get there. The Administrative Leadership Team also directed that the 2020 Sustainability Direction would form the core direction for developing the 2012-2014 business plans and budget.

This strategic direction includes thoughtful input from all areas in The City that will move us forward. By building a shared commitment amongst City departments in achieving these results, Administration will be able to provide Council with the best information to make the best decisions. The Direction will help to ensure:
  • That we consider the whole, connected picture of how our city works together – buses and cars with commerce and people, water and rivers with recreation and industry;
  • That short term decisions are linked with long term outcomes; and
  • That we strive toward resiliency in maintaining our line of sight through boom and bust cycles.

The City of Calgary is committed to sustainability through its own operations and planning and through its policymaking and regulatory functions. In order for The City to continue to address both global and local challenges, sustainability must build on The City’s existing efforts and continued innovation.
