Forecasting
This area involves preparation of forecasts of variables influencing the operations of the Corporation, at various levels of detail, for both planning and budgeting. Forecasts may be prepared and updated on an ongoing basis for corporate use or on behalf of individual departments/divisions. After development of a forecasting model and preparation of the initial forecast, the model(s) and responsibility may be transferred to the client department. In some cases, consultative and/or review services are provided in connection with other parties' forecasts.
The economy and other factors are monitored on a continuous basis. This encompasses tracking such items as employment growth, inflation, specific events (such as natural disasters), federal and provincial policy changes, etc.
Advice on these changes is provided appropriately. This advice may involve adjustments to then-current forecasts, memoranda of advice to Finance or updating annual detailed reviews for credit rating purposes. A selected number of key indicators are updated regularly and made available through the Internet.
Information provision
Corporate Economics monitors and disseminates key economic indicators such as inflation, employment, interest rates and exchange rates.
Policy analysis
These projects originate in response to current problems facing the Corporation or parts thereof. Corporate Economics work on these problems is comprised of problem definition, detailed analysis, generating alternative solutions and usually working through implementation of these solutions. These problems, or problem areas, may be externally generated or may be internal to the City. Issues requiring Corporate Economics services will normally have significant economic and/or public finance connotations, although this may not always be the case.
