Varsity Multi-Service Redevelopment

Project update - October 2018

The feedback received at the engagement sessions extended beyond the land use redesignation proposal to include many aspects of this project, including design. As a result, The City has made the decision to submit the land use redesignation application, originally planned for spring/summer 2018, at the same time as the development permit, anticipated for 2019. Submitting the land use redesignation with the development permit will ensure the feedback received earlier this year as well as from the next phase of engagement can be incorporated into both applications.

We are now entering the design phase of the project. During the design phase, key considerations that will inform the design of the facility will be collected and explored, including site and zoning requirements, building design options, cost and stakeholder input. The design team has been selected for the project and we are currently in the process of planning upcoming engagement opportunities. More information will be provided once the engagement dates and details have been confirmed.

Project Background

The Varsity Fire Station has reached the end of its life cycle after servicing the community for 46 years. A new fire station is needed to meet the growing needs of the community and surrounding area.

The redevelopment of the Fire Station provides the opportunity to better optimize the space as a multi-service facility. In 2019, The City plans to submit a land use re-designation application that will include provision for an affordable housing development and other services to the community.

Location

The new facility will be built on City-owned land to the north of the existing facility at 3740 32 Ave N.W. This will allow the existing facility to remain operational on the south side of the site. Once construction of the new multi-service facility is completed, the old building will be demolished. More information will be available once the design and contractor selection processes are complete.
