The Active Living Program (ALP) is part of The City of Calgary's commitment to a work environment that focuses on health, safety and wellness, and supports work-life balance. The ALP helps employees enjoy a physically active lifestyle through a subsidy on annual recreation passes.
How it works
When an eligible employee buys an annual (12 month) pass at any City of Calgary Aquatic and Fitness Centre (including Leisure Centres) or a City Partner facility, the ALP provides a reimbursement to help cover the cost.
Before purchasing the pass, the employee must complete the
ALP eligibility form and be accepted into the program.
Requirements
To qualify for the ALP reimbursement, The City of Calgary employee must:
- Pay into The City of Calgary benefits plan.
- Be the primary pass and account holder. If other family members wish to have a 12 month annual pass as well, they can be included on the employee's pass when it is purchased.
Please note: ALP reimbursements of $200 for City of Calgary facilities or $150 for City Partner facilities both are subject to taxes, EI, CPP, etc.
Process
To take part in the Active Living Program, please follow these steps:
Step 1: Fill out and send in the ALP eligibility form.
Step 2: Wait for the official confirmation letter that confirms your eligibility, and an application for the reimbursement.
Step 3: Purchase your ALP pass at a City of Calgary Aquatic and Fitness Centre or City Partner facility.
Step 4: Submit the receipt or "Pass Sold Confirmation" and application to the Active Living Program, Mail Code #76 (City of Calgary facilities can do this for you).
Once these are received, the Employee Wellness Administrator will process your application and will send it to Human Resources to apply the reimbursement to your pay cheque.
Note: Payroll deduction option
This applies to passes to City facilities only. If you wish to purchase a pass at a City of Calgary Aquatic and Fitness or Leisure Centre and are a permanent City employee, you may apply to purchase the pass through payroll deduction option.
With this option, the total cost of the pass is divided over 22 pay periods.
If interested in this option, please call 403-268-4300 or email alp@calgary.ca for more details.
Renewals
If you received ALP reimbursement last year, the Active Living Program will automatically pre-approve your eligibility 2-3 weeks prior to pass expiry. At this time a renewal letter and ALP application form will be sent to you via the internal mail code (provided when you first enrolled in ALP), or to your home address.
City of Calgary facility participants: Present the renewal letter and the signed ALP application form to the facility when you are renewing the pass.
City Partner participants: Buy your 12 month annual pass at the facility. Sign the ALP application form sent to you and place it plus the pass receipt in the internal mail and send to the Active Living Program (Mail Code #76) to receive reimbursement.

Golf Punch Program
Permanent employees have the option of using a payroll deduction service to purchase punchcards for City Golf Courses. Using this service, the total cost of the puchcard is deducted from the employee's paycheque over 13 pay periods. The ALP reimbursement does not apply to golf punchcards or passes. To get the best value for your purchase, consider where, when and how often you plan to play.
After viewing golf courses you should know what type of punchcard you plan to purchase and for which course
Please call 403-268-2618 to determine your eligibility for this service and arrange payment.
