Gain skills, knowledge and experience working for The City

The City of Calgary has many opportunities, both voluntary and work related, for students of all ages. For example, students and recent graduates working for The City can look forward to:

  • work experience that relates to your education,
  • challenging and interesting work,
  • networking opportunities and building relationships with key people,
  • working with leading edge and award winning technology,
  • working with skilled professionals,
  • developing communication, leadership and organizational skills,
  • work that can lead to part-time or full-time employment, and
  • work life balance.

Positions that you may consider applying for after you graduate from high school or post secondary education could be in administrative, technical/technology, trades, transit, professional, sports/wellness, police, fire or seasonal.

Summer student jobs

We also hire summer students. Over the past three years The City has hired approximately 90 students per year. The jobs are funded through the provincial and federal government. The jobs are four-months in length and normally start in May and end in late August or early September. Once funding is received, The City posts summer student jobs in February. *Some positions require post-secondary education.

Student/youth related jobs

Concession attendant, dance instructor, lifeguard and swim instructor are just a few examples of positions that may be of interest to students/youth.

Volunteer opportunities

Students that volunteer with The City can look forward to:

  • making a difference in the community you live in,
  • networking with people you have a shared interest with, and
  • building, learning and developing skills that can help you in the work-place.

Learn about 'Play Leadership' and how you can meet new friends and become a positive role model while learning to lead younger children in meaningful play activities. You may also be interested in learning about becoming a member of the 'Youth Advisory Committee' – meet other youth and develop leadership skills. The City also offers volunteer opportunities in the Bird Sanctuary, Community & Neighbourhood Services, ParksPolice and Recreation.
