2017 Canadian Open Data Summit

Student Sponsorship

The City of Calgary is seeking three post-secondary students to send to the Canadian Open Data Summit on June 12 – 14 taking place in Edmonton, Alberta. The selected students will receive reimbursement for travel expenses, hotel accommodations, and conference admission (maximum $1500 per person). The Canadian Open Data Summit is an excellent opportunity to learn more about open data and network with professionals in data-related industries from across the country.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must over the age of 18 years old and be enrolled at a post-secondary institution in Calgary for the 2017 academic year
  • Qualifying institutions include Mount Royal University (MRU) , University of Calgary (U of C), or Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT)
  • Applicant must have an interest in data-driven decision making, big data, advanced analytics, integration, innovation, computer science, web design, social media, other data-related fields
  • Applicant should be keen data enthusiasts or practitioners

Sponsorship Requirements

If selected, the applicant must deliver a comprehensive report, presentation, or other agreed-upon deliverable to The City of Calgary after attending the Canadian Open Data Summit. This deliverable must be provided in a timely manner as mutually agreed upon by The City of Calgary and the student. The selected applicant must also provide a one-page synopsis of their deliverable. The deliverable and the synopsis may be used by The City of Calgary for its own internal purposes, including for internal and external communication and promotional purposes, and may be provided to third parties.

The deliverable will be decided upon by The City of Calgary and the student, but may include any of the following:

  • Synopsis of the Canadian Open Data Summit
  • White Paper on applications, research or ideas gleaned from the Summit
  • Gap analysis of what tactics can be carried out to maximize use and interest of open data
  • Report on data trends and leading open data practices
  • Build an app using open data

Potential topics may include:

  • Future of open data
  • Value of open data
  • Open data as a vehicle for civic engagement and decision-making
  • Open data and artificial intelligence, internet-of-things, security, privacy, sharing economy
  • Crowd-sourcing potential of open data
  • Tableau product comparison/evaluation to other analytics tools
