In the earliest stages of the project, a design ideas competition was held to raise the profile of The Bridges
, encourage participation by national and international top professionals, and provide opportunities for innovative and creative ideas to be generated. It also provided an opportunity for public input to reaffirm community values and vision. The information gathered from the public participation
activities were compiled and included in the proposal call to design teams, released in the fall of 1998.
The design ideas competition attracted submissions from across Canada and the United States. Sturgess Architecture of Calgary led the winning team comprised of:
- Architecture: Jeremy Sturgess, Lesley Beale; Chito Pablustan; Sturgess Architecture
- Landscape Architecture: Doug Carlyle; Carlyle & Associates, Keith Orlesky; Cooper Robertson & Partners
- Marketing: Glenn Lyons; Lyons Venini & Associates
- Engineering & Transportation: David Watt and Nick Finn; D.A. Watt Consulting Group
