The Bridges - Public spaces

One of the most significant characteristics of The Bridges is its open space, which makes up almost one third of the lands. There are two parks, two plazas and two public squares.

Murdoch Park is the largest (3.5 ha) and is named after Calgary’s first mayor. Its central location and variety of recreational and social amenities make it the heart of the community. It has a promenade and the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association centre, as well as soccer fields, a creative playground, a toboggan run and a commemorative wall built with bricks from the former Calgary General Hospital.

McDougall Park is 1.2 ha and accommodates both passive and active recreational activities. A regional pathway runs through McDougall Park that leads to the Bridgeland-Memorial LRT station and the city-wide pathway system. Theses pathways provide direct pedestrian and cycling access to the downtown, the Bow River, Calgary Zoo, and the Rivers District.

General Avenue Plaza is located on the main street and provides a gathering place in front of the retail businesses on General Avenue. Memorial Plaza has been incorporated in to the LRT station providing the station with “a sense of place” as described in the City of Calgary Transit Oriented Development Policy Guidelines.

McPherson Square and St. Matthew Square offer areas to sit, read and visit for those living or working in the surrounding area.

Almost 1,000 trees have been planted in all 3 phases of the project throughout the parks, plazas, squares and boulevards. Efforts were made to protect or relocate existing vegetation wherever possible and to integrate it into the community's mature landscape.
