Bylaw violation tickets

When you have been issued a violation ticket for a bylaw infraction, you may plead guilty or not guilty to the offence indicated on the ticket.

If you plead guilty, you have two options:

  1. If you have been given a Voluntary Payment Option, you may pay the Voluntary Payment amount on or before the court appearance date indicated on the ticket.
  2. You may appear before a Justice at the appearance address and date indicated on the ticket. If you plead guilty and are fined, you may negotiate a payment schedule.

If you plead not guilty, you have two options:

  1. You may plead not guilty by sending the signed violation ticket by registered mail to the address on the ticket. The signed ticket must be received on or before the appearance date indicated on the ticket. Note: Keep your post office receipt as proof of mailing. You will then be notified of the trial date by regular mail which will be sent to the address you indicated on the ticket. If you do not receive a notice of the trial date by regular mail, you must contact the Court office by calling toll-free 310-0000 or by contacting www.albertacourts.ab.ca to obtain the trial date
  2. You may appear before a Justice at the appearance address and date indicated on the ticket. If you plead not guilty, a trial date will be set.
