The City of Calgary receives frequent questions, concerns and complaints regarding the bylaw topics identified below. Click on the link for each topic to get:

Bylaws by topic

  • Appliances and refrigerators: The Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 section 9 outlines the safe and suitable storage of appliances in and around your property.

  • Building and structure maintenance: Regulations regarding building and structure maintenance are found in part 12 of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 and in the Land Use Bylaw 1P2007.

  • Cats: The Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw 23M2006 regulates cats in our city.

  • Composting: Composting regulations are found in part 8 of the Community Standards Bylaw.

  • Dogs: The Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw 23M2006 regulates dogs in our city.
  • Drainage: The Drainage Bylaw 37M2005 ensures appropriate water use and drainage in and around your property.

  • Election signs: It is important that all registered candidates who participate in an election understand and comply with the Temporary Signs on Highways Bylaw 29M97. If any signs are found in contravention, the candidate shall be held responsible for any fines levied.

  • Fire hydrants: Fire hydrants regulations are found in section 41 of the Water Utility Bylaw 40M2006.

  • Fire pits: Fire pit regulations are a part of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 sections 11-18.

  • Garbage: The Waste & Recycling Bylaw 20M2001 regulates garbage disposal in Calgary. While the Waste and Recycling Bylaw is the main bylaw related to garbage disposal in the city, sections of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 and Traffic Bylaw 26M96 also relgate to the burning and transportation of waste materials.

  • Glenmore Reservoir: Glenmore Reservoir regulations are found in section 23 of the Water Utility Bylaw 40M2006 and in section 16 of the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw 23M2006.

  • Graffiti: Graffiti is enforced under the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 section 19.

  • Grass and herbaceous plants: Grass and herbaceous plants are regulated in sections 45 & 46 of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004.

  • Idling reduction signs: While idling is not currently regulated under any City bylaws, it is discouraged. Citizens may obtain signs to ask motorists to avoid idling in certain areas.

  • Littering: Littering is regulated by the Street Bylaw 20M88 in section 17 and the Parks and Pathways Bylaw 20M2003 in section 27.
  • Noise: Noise is regulated through the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 sections 26-39.

  • Nuisances: Nuisances escaping residential property are regulated by the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 sections 40-44.

  • Outdoor lights: Regulations regarding outdoor lights are found in section 43 of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004.

  • Panhandling: The Panhandling Bylaw 3M99 regulates when, where, and how panhandling can take place. This is for the protection of the public and the panhandler.

  • Parks and pathways: Calgary's parks and pathways are regulated by the Parks & Pathways Bylaw 20M2003.

  • Property addressing: Property addressing regulations are found in part 14 of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004.

  • Public behaviour: The Public Behaviour Bylaw 54M2006 was established to regulate problematic social behaviours that may have a negative impact on the enjoyment of public spaces in Calgary.

  • Recreational vehicles: The Traffic Bylaw 26M96 regulates RV parking and use in the city.

  • Sewers: The bylaws related sewers deal with appropriate water use and drainage in and around your property. For more details please refer to the Drainage Bylaw 37M2005, as well as theWastewater Bylaw 14M2012.

  • Signage: Temporary signs, including election signage, are regulated under the Temporary Signs Bylaw 29M97.

  • Smoke: Smoke regulations are found in section 42 of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004.

  • Smoking: Smoking is regulated under the Tobacco Reduction Act, as well as the municipal Smoking Bylaw 57M92.

  • Snow and ice: Snow and ice removal is regulated under the Street Bylaw 20M88 in section 67.

  • Streets: The Street Bylaw 20M88 and the Traffic Bylaw 26M96 regulates the use of streets and activities to, adjacent or near streets.

  • Trees and shrubs: Trees and shrubs are regulated under the Street Bylaw 20M88 section 68(6) and protected under the Tree Protection Bylaw 23M2002​.

  • Truck routes: Truck routes are regulated by the Truck Routes Bylaw 60M90.

  • Untidy properties: Untidy properties regulations are found in part 4 of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004.

  • Waste: The Waste & Recycling Bylaw 20M2001 regulates garbage disposal in Calgary. While the Waste and Recycling Bylaw is the main bylaw related to garbage disposal in the city, sections of the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 and the Calgary Traffic Bylaw 26M96 also relate to the burning and transportation of waste materials.

  • Water: Residential water use is regulated by the Water Utility Bylaw 40M2006.

  • Weeds: Regulations regarding weeds can be found in the Weed Control Act S.A. 2008, c. W-5.1 , the Weed Control Regulation 19/2010 and the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004.

  • Yards: Yard maintenance is regulated by the Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004.
