On July 1, 2016 the Province amended the Municipal Government Act, RSA 2000, c. M-26 to replace all references to Business Revitalization Zones with Business Improvement Areas. The former Business Revitalization Zone Regulation, AR 377/94, which expired on June 30, 2016, was replaced by the Business Improvement Area Regulation, AR 93/2016. As a result, effective July 1, 2016 the Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) designation was changed to Business Improvement Area (BIA). Under the transitional provisions in the BIA Regulation, a BRZ established under the old legislation is deemed to be a BIA under the new legislation. While some BIAs may continue to use the BRZ designation, or may not use either designation in their name, they operate under the BIA legislation. All references below to a Business Improvement Area include Business Revitalization Zones.
