A safe community for all
With the goal of reducing both intentional and unintentional injuries in Calgary, Safer Calgary is an umbrella coalition that promotes safety and violence prevention coordinates safety promotion and violence prevention in the city. Focusing on the three main issues of injury prevention, violence prevention and natural and built environments, Safer Calgary strives to fulfil their mission of "fostering community action towards a safer Calgary". There are hundreds of organizations in Calgary that represent a cross-section of the local community networks and social structure of the city. Safer Calgary provides a network for these organizations.
Guided by their mission to "foster community action towards the creation of a safer Calgary", four main issue streams have been focused on:
- Injury Prevention
- Violence Prevention
- Natural and Built Environment
- Community-based Crime Prevention
In 2003, Calgary was proud to be designated a Safe Community by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Safe Communities Foundation (SCF). Calgary continues its participation on a national and international level as a member of the WHO and SCF networks.
