Donations: Help fill a backpack
All 10 Staples stores locations in Calgary are accepting donations of cash and suggested grade appropriate supplies. Although any donation is greatly appreciated, a cash donation of $40 ensures a complete backpack. Staples stores will be collecting donations until September 15, 2012
Donors will receive a recognition name card (in the shape of a backpack) to be displayed in the Staples store. Donations totalling $20 or more are eligible for a tax receipt from The City of Calgary.
“Through the ‘Stuff a Backpack for Kids Campaign’ we were able to help 100 families in need with 450 backpacks last year. These were distributed through our resource centre which allowed us to connect with families we otherwise would not have had the opportunity to do so.” -Minoush Rafie, Program Coordinator for Closer To Home Community Services
Registration: Child In Need
Families unable to afford school supplies for children that are in Kindergarten to Grade 12 are asked to contact 3-1-1 by calling or through Calgary.ca. Families will then be provided a Community Resource Centre to contact according to their neighbourhood. The Resource Centre will conduct an assessment prior to registering families. Alternatively, families can search for their community name here to find an agency contact. When contacting the agency for your assessment, please refer to “Staples for Education.”
Child In Need registration starts Wednesday, August 1st and the registration deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012. Anticipated delivery of backpacks to eligible recipients is the week of August 27, 2012.
More about Staples for Education
The Staples for Education program backpacks are filled with support from generous Calgarians. The program has made a big difference in the lives of children and over the years our program has filled thousands of backpacks with school supplies.
In 2011, we filled 2,547 backpacks and raised $90,261.00.
The Staples for Education program believes that children need the right tools to succeed when they start a new school year. Through our work with community agencies, the program accepts requests for support from low income Calgarians. Staples stores collect the needed money and school supply donations to fill the need. Supplies are then lovingly packed by Staples staff, community agency partners and City of Calgary staff into backpacks and provided to the young students at the beginning of the school year.
The program is coordinated by The City of Calgary, Community and Neighbourhood Services.
