FCSS Funding

Established in 1966 under the Preventive Social Services Act, the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Calgary program is a joint program between the Province of Alberta and The City of Calgary to fund preventive social services.

Funding for the FCSS program is shared between the two levels of government with the province contributing up to 80 percent of the program cost and the municipality covering the remaining 20 percent. In Calgary, city council has made a commitment to contribute more than the minimum requirement and allocated 25 per cent of the program cost.

Previously, increased funding from both the province and the municipality allowed the FCSS program to support on-going as well as new social programs. However, due to extremely limited new funds and rising costs beyond agencies control, FCSS will not be accepting funding applications for new programs during the 2011 funding cycle. Instead, the program will continue to invest in programs to which it has an on-going commitment.

This decision is in line with agencies requests that funders be upfront about available funds, to ensure that the minimum time possible is spent on writing funding proposals.
