Create programs with employers in Calgary including job shadowing, internship and part time or summer employment, which matches existing Aboriginal employees as mentors.
Aboriginal youth spoke about their experiences as young people in new jobs and the lack of support and the racism they experienced. They felt that if they had not been the only Aboriginal employees, or, if they had an adult mentor to support them they would not have quit as quickly or, at all.
Create Aboriginal Role Model Programs in Schools. Role models should be older Aboriginal youth who have succeeded in school.
Again, Aboriginal youth felt that they needed additional support to help them stay in school. For some, family members were not able to fill this role. Other youth that had overcome adversity and succeeded were the best option.
Offer cultural programming which links Aboriginal youth with Elders and cultural teachers as role models
Many Aboriginal youth wanted to learn about their cultures but did not know who to go to for instruction. They felt a responsibility to teach the next generation and were looking for cultural role models they could approach for teachings, support and advice.Ghost River Rediscovery was suggested as a positive model.
Create opportunities to link Aboriginal youth with Aboriginal professionals
Aboriginal youth felt a great deal of pride in the success of other Aboriginal professionals. Although they wished to meet these informal role models, they felt there was no opportunity for both groups to come together.
