​A secondary suite is a self-contained dwelling unit within a main residence that has separate living, cooking, sleeping and bathroom facilities. They are commonly referred to as basement suites or in-law suites. Calgary Housing Company (CHC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary that manages approximately 10,000 households and provides safe and affordable housing options to 25,000 Calgarians. CHC operates three types of programs: Subsidized housing - to help low-income Calgarians who pay more than 30 per cent of their income for housing. This program provides the deepest level of subsidy. Near market rentals - for Calgarians who are close to being able to afford current private market rent levels CHC offers rentals approximately 10 per cent below market rates. Rent supplement - provides rental assistance to tenants housed with private landlords. Tenants must meet the same qualifying criteria as applicants to CHC's social housing programs. ​Apply once for five subsidy programs, including Calgary Transit low income monthly passes for youth, adults and seniors, recreation programs and facilities, no cost spay / neuter, seniors services home maintenance, and property tax assistance. Ongoing community cost? No

​Eligibility is assessed through Fair Entry and is based on household income and meeting one out of eight qualifications. As of April 2017, the cost of a low income monthly pass will be provided on a sliding scale. There are three price bands: $5.05, $35.35 and $50.50 per month depending on how much a customer earns. ​Yearly pass available to residents who are 65 years or older and provided on a sliding scale. Applicants will need to apply through the Fair Entry application system. Ongoing community cost? No

​Residents 65 years or older are entitled to unlimited access to regular Calgary Transit services. Passes are $95 a year as of February 2017 and are sold at Calgary Transit Customer Service Centers. Proof of age and residency required. Please note that senior passes cannot be used for Access Calgary services. Ongoing community cost? No

​Almost all registered recreation programs offered by The City are eligible under the Fee Assistance Program - customer pays 10 per cent of registration fee, up to a maximum subsidy and a 75 per cent discount on general admission drop-in rates at aquatic facilities and leisure centres. ​Eligible low income Calgarians can obtain free spay and neuter surgery for companion cats and dogs. Applicants qualify through Fair Entry. Dog breeders are not eligible for this program.

​This program helps low income seniors (65+) to live safely and securely in their own homes by providing basic yard care, snow removal, house cleaning, interior and exterior painting, and minor repairs. Applicants qualify through Fair Entry. Ongoing community cost? No

​Residential property tax owner's experiencing financial hardship, regardless of age, may be eligible for a credit/grant for property tax increase through the Property Tax Assistance Program. Applicants must qualify through Fair Entry. Ongoing community cost? No

​Calgary Parks delivers accessible park programs and initiatives that contribute to a sense of community (day camps, mobile adventure playgrounds, nature discovery drop-in programs). Ongoing community cost? No

​Calgary Parks fosters active living through parks activities (mobile adventure playground, special events). Ongoing community cost? No

​Engages children grades 1 to 6 in fair play, friendship building, and fundamental movement skills. Implementation of High Five principles promotes healthy play in participants. Leaders provide developmentally appropriate games and challenge them to work in co-operation with their peers. The games are challenging and constructive, building friendships between children with diverse backgrounds, teaching leadership and self-esteem skills. Ongoing community cost? No

​Engages youth, grade 7-12, in a drop-in program centered on friendship building, exploring individual creativity, fundamental movement skills, and increasing self-confidence and esteem. Leaders promote teamwork by encouraging co-operation during team / partner games, building friendships and a sense of belonging. Ongoing community cost? No
