Fire station tours and smoke alarm checks or installs for seniors are possible and can be completed (subject to availability, firefighters may be called away for emergencies).   • Youth Firesetters (Y-Fires)

    ​A Calgary Fire Department program for children ages 3-17 who have set fires or are drawn to playing with fire. This free, confidential program educates children and teens about fire safety and helps modify fire setting behavior. Y-FIRES Hotline 403-268-2000. Ongoing community cost? No

  • Junior Fire Chief

    ​Each year during Fire Prevention Week, the Calgary Fire Department appoints a Junior Fire Chief to act as a fire safety ambassador. The Junior Chief's duties include promoting the year's Fire Prevention Week theme and encouraging friends and fellow students to make sure their families replace smoke alarms every 10 years. The Junior Fire Chief assists with checking smoke alarm manufacture dates and creating a family escape plan. In addition, the Junior Fire Chief and his/her family goes on a fire engine ride and has lunch with the crew at one of the stations. Ongoing community cost? No

  • Engine 23 at public library

    ​Calgary Fire Department, in partnership with the Calgary Public Library created an interactive installation dubbed "The New Adventure of Engine 23" in the downtown library. Engine 23 helps children play and pretend together, learn life-saving fire safety tips, while promoting early literacy. Each week members of the department take turns reading to the children.   • Fire Cadets

    ​The Fire Cadet Program gives high school students the opportunity to learn about what it takes to be a firefighter by teaching life-skills, including leadership, community involvement, teamwork, pride and respect. Cadets receive theoretical and practical training to learn basic firefighting skills, applying those skills and values in daily activities. Ongoing community cost? No

  • Home Safety Program

    ​Firefighters visit about 25,000 homes annually, sharing important home safety information, inspecting smoke alarms, and when needed, replacing batteries and installing new smoke alarms. The program focuses on homes 10+ years old. Ongoing community cost? No

  • After the Emergency

    Under this innovative program, firefighter-led response teams visit neighboring areas following an emergency, such as fire or flood, delivering education and support services to affected residents. Ongoing community cost? No

  • Fire Prevention Week

    ​Fire Prevention Week in October is an opportunity to talk to Calgarians about fire safety and what each of us can do to make sure our families and homes are fire safe.     ​The City and the Federation of Calgary Communities offer help to learn the development pl​anning and approval process. The program is open to anyone and completing the certificate will give you the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools; needed to actively and effectively participate in the planning process.
