Emergency kits for vehicles

There are many circumstances under which you might need emergency items in your vehicle. Your vehicle might break down, or you may be caught unexpectedly in severe winter weather. It is best to be prepared by keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle. This kit should contain the following:

  • A supply of food that won’t spoil, such as energy bars
  • Water in plastic bottles so they won’t break if frozen (change the water every six months)
  • Blanket
  • Extra clothing and shoes
  • First aid kit
  • Shovel, scraper and snowbrush
  • Candle in a deep can and waterproof, strike anywhere matches
  • Wind-up flashlight (if you use a battery-powered flashlight, replace the batteries every six months)
  • Whistle, in case you need to attract attention
  • Sand, salt or non-clumping kitty litter
  • Antifreeze/windshield washer fluid
  • Tow rope
  • Booster cables
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Warning light or road flares
