Sparky the Fire Dog is the official mascot and goodwill ambassador for the Calgary Fire Department. In 1958 the Calgary Fire Department had a real dog named Sparky as their official mascot. But in 1978, a furry mascot called Sparky took over his duties, touring local schools and appearing in parades to promote the message: Think fire safety.

Sparky was a real dog
The CFD's "Sparky" was a real dog. A friendly Dalmatian was donated to the CFD's Fire Prevention Bureau in 1958. He was given the honourary title of Chief of the Junior Fire Department, which included Calgary school children in grades one through six. His duties included visiting schools and community events to promote fire safety education.
Sparky the Fire Dog is also a trademarked character of the U.S.-based National Fire Protection Association and has been promoting fire prevention and education since 1951.
