The Calgary Fire Department’s Fire Training Academy is where all firefighters begin their careers. The amenities within the Training Academy offer new and seasoned firefighters with prime opportunities to develop, practice and perfect their skills in non-emergency situations. In addition to recruit training, technical and specialty training is also conducted at the facility, including aquatic, high angle and heavy rescue.

- Canada Task Force 2 (USAR Team)
Facilities
The Fire Training Academy is located at 5727 23rd Ave. S.E. The two storey brick training building is home to three classrooms. The Multi-Agency Training (MAT) Centre is located next to the training building. This building houses numerous classrooms as well as a large indoor training facility with a four-storey building facade used for rope rescue, ladder training and search and rescue training as well as an extensive trench rescue training area.
The outside training area surrounding the academy includes:
- Smoke tower (live fire training exercises are conducted in this five storey reinforced concrete structure).
- Two burn pans (a safe environment used for lighting small fires for fire extinguisher training).
- Driving pad (used for training firefighters to drive and operate various pieces of fire apparatus).
- Hazardous materials training area.
- Confined space / trench rescue training area.
- Rail car (a simulated environment used for training firefighters in scenarios involving rail cars).
- Vehicle extrication area (an open area for practicing vehicle extrication techniques).
