The Kevin Coupland Memorial Award

The Kevin Coupland Memorial Award is awarded to a first year Cadet who exhibits Kevin's qualities of Leadership, Excellence and Hard Work.

Kevin was a vibrant member of the Fire Cadet Academy. He was the victim of an avalanche and passed away April 14, 2002 at Fortress Mountain ski resort. This young man was a credit to his family, his community, and the Calgary Fire Department. Kevin had aspirations of becoming a Calgary firefighter, just like his grandfather, retired Division Chief Lawrence Ashley.

Kevin's family, fellow Cadets, many friends and the entire Academy were devastated by his passing. To keep Kevin's memory alive, the Cadets proposed an annual memorial award. This award consists of a statue depicting a firefighter in the midst of vehicle extrication (Kevin's favourite skill) and is mounted on a base that was made by Calgary Firefighter Mike Manchulenko (one of Kevin's instructors). This plaque is engraved with the term "Striving for Excellence" which is a term that Kevin lived by in all aspects of his life. We will never forget this young man.
