Layla Shiber Memorial Award

Fire Cadet Layla Shiber passed away on August 20, 2003 as a result of a motor vehicle collision. Her passing left a huge void in the lives of those who knew her. The Layla Shiber Memorial Award was created to celebrate Layla's life and to remember the incredible ways she touched our lives.

The award depicts a female firefighter holding the Jaws of Life and is mounted on a base that was made by Calgary Firefighter Mike Manchulenko. The plaque is engraved with the term A Light in the Darkness, which is truly what Layla was.

This award is presented each year to a graduating Cadet. Both his/her peers and instructors elect the candidate based on the following attributes outlined by Layla's classmates. Her classmates described her in the following way:
