You may have smoked in your home for many years without an accident, but it just takes a single hot ember or moment of inattention to start a fire. Smoking materials that are not disposed properly, either indoors or outside on a deck or balcony, can also re-ignite.
What you can do:
- Never smoke in bed.
- Use caution when smoking and drinking alcohol.
- Provide smokers with large, deep, non-tip ashtrays and wet the contents before dumping them.
- Do not extinguish or leave butts in planters in or outside the home. Planting soils and peat moss can provide a perfect environment for a fire.
