About the park

When Devonian Gardens opened in 1977, it was a state-of-the-art facility that attracted international attention. Thirty-four years later, much of the infrastructure had exceeded its 30-year lifecycle, and The City of Calgary Parks is rejuvenating this key downtown attraction.

The owner of the TD Square Retail space and the landlord of Devonian Gardens has changed hands. The new owners, 20 Vic Management Inc. have completed a multi-block renovation to Calgary's downtown retail mall. Part of this project includes a new skylight, changes in access/egress and a floor opening in the Devonian Gardens.

While reopening was anticipated to be late fall 2011, it is now expected to reopen in summer 2012.  Minor construction delays have resulted in a lost window of opportunity to safely bring in tropical plants to the new Gardens.  A number of exotic and fragile plants can only be shipped during certain times of the year as the plants must be craned up into the 4th storey Gardens from the outside. The cold temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns in Calgary in late fall require The City to delay the shipment of these plants to the spring so that the risk of loss is minimized.

We understand this news may be disappointing. Devonian Gardens will be a significant public gathering place for Calgarians and tourists as one of North America’s largest indoor gardens. Ensuring the quality of the construction of the Gardens and protection of the Park’s assets, like the tropical plants, is paramount for The City of Calgary. We appreciate your patience and look forward to seeing you visit the new Gardens in summer 2012.
