Pearce Park

Maintaining our parks

Parks Operations maintains over 7,700 hectares on 5,345 open spaces throughout Calgary. The City works closely with advisory committees, other business units and community associations to collaborate and engage with the public.

Naturalization initiative

Over the next few years, Parks will be changing the way we care for some green spaces throughout the city, including a naturalization initiative. Changes will increase plant and animal diversity, and will reduce the need for regular maintenance.

Parks is in the process of identifying options and opportunities for moving toward a more natural state in some of our parks and green spaces, while balancing current use of these spaces.

Parks irrigation water line decommission

In August 2012, Parks started decommissioning unused park irrigation water lines in various parts of the city. There are a total of 300 sites city-wide, approximately 100 sites were completed in 2012 with the remainder being completed in 2013. Most of the work will be conducted near a park, road median or in an alley. Nearby residents will be notified about the work being done and advised of any water service disruptions or parking restrictions.
