The City of Calgary Parks will be replacing approximately 18 trees in a one-block stretch on Stephen Avenue Mall (1 Street SE to Centre Street) from May 11 to May 31. This project includes removal of dead trees, root balls and existing soil – we apologize for the associated noise.
The removed trees will be replaced with Green Ash trees, a hardy tree that Parks has had much success with in other areas of Calgary.
Growing conditions for the trees on Stephen Avenue Mall are difficult. The trees must contend with salt build-up during the winter. In the spring, ice encases the roots for an extended period of time, which prevents leaf growth until later in the season. During the summer, the trees are susceptible to drying out because they grow in vaults.
Parks will be performing the work in the morning hours between 7:00 and 11:00 a.m. to have the least impact on businesses and clientele.
Businesses and others in the area will notice the new trees very soon after the current trees have been removed.
