Timelines for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games potential bid

Calgary’s potential bid for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games has been underway since 2016. We are in the Olympic Bid Dialogue Stage.

The bidding process for the 2026 Olympics is different than those in years past. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has implemented a new strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic movement, called Olympic Agenda 2020. It includes 40 recommendations that facilitate a more host-city friendly process to bidding on and hosting Olympic Games.

The Exploration Stage (July 2016 – September 2017)

The Calgary Bid Exploration Committee was assembled to determine if it’s feasible for Calgary to successfully host the 2026 games and, if so, whether Calgary should enter the Olympic bid process.

CBEC’s final report is available to review.

After receiving the report, City Council needed more information to decide whether Calgary should bid for the 2026 games. Beginning in August 2017, The City continued researching the costs, risks and benefits of bidding and hosting the Games.

The Dialogue Stage (October 2017 – October 2018)

Throughout this Stage, The City of Calgary will:

  • Determine the financial viability of hosting the Games
  • Clarify citizen opinion and perspectives on a potential Olympic bid
  • Understand shared government priorities for the city, province and country’s future
  • Evaluate the potential risks and benefits associated with pursuing an Olympic bid and hosting of the Games
  • Explore the potential vision and legacy of a bid and hosting of the Games
  • Understand whether or not hosting the Games would support Calgary’s long term economic and cultural growth
  • Understand International Olympic Committee (IOC) requirements
Public engagement is expected to run May to September 2018. This would be followed by a plebiscite vote.
The Dialogue stage is ongoing until October 2018. In October 2018, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will invite a select number of cities to join the Candidature stage.
