School programs - swimming, grades 7 to 12

The City provides schools with a number of swimming lessons for junior high and high school students in grades 7 through 12. Intensity levels may be adjusted to match the needs of your students.

Programs

Springboard Diving

Learn the basics as well as more difficult progressions of springboard diving. Instruction is geared to the individual student's ability.
Prerequisite: Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4, Lifesaving Society Swimmer 2 or equivalent.

Synchronized Swimming (Star 1-5)

Progress from simple sculling and basic strokes to more advanced sculling, eggbeater, simple positions and figures. There is a sequence of strokes, propulsions and figures at each level. There is a time and distance requirement for the sequence at each level.
Prerequisite: Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4, Lifesaving Society Swimmer 2 or equivalent.

Synchronized Swimming (Star 6-10)

Build on skills learned in Star 1-5. The figures are more complex, and sequences are progressively longer with more figures as well as hybrids and more propulsion techniques. Spins and twists are introduced in Star 10.
Prerequisite:  Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4, Lifesaving Society Swimmer 2 or equivalent.  Recommend Star 5

Water Polo

Learn the basics of water polo and practice those skills through game situations. 
Prerequisite: Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4, Lifesaving Society Swimmer 2 or equivalent.

Snorkelling

Learn about basic snorkel skills and safety, including how to clear both mask and snorkel. 
Prerequisite: Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4,  Lifesaving Society Swimmer 2 or equivalent.

Stroke Enhancement

This program is for the students who need more work on swim stroke technique and refinement. 
Prerequisite: Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4, Lifesaving Society Swimmer 2 or equivalent.

Sailing

Junior and Senior high school sailing lessons are available from May to September. 

Pleasure Craft Operator Certification

Recent legislation now requires that all operators obtain a Pleasure Craft Operators Card which accredits the holder as being certified under the basic requirements of the Canadian Coast Guard.  Students 13 years of age or older can purchase the BOAT Study Guide and take the test when they are ready.
