Title: City Council Salary Numbers Validated Following Accusations of Misinformation

COCFeatured: True

COCShortDescription: Following false accusations of misinformation, the City Council 2019 salary numbers that I presented were validated

COCDescriptionHTML:
Late Monday afternoon, I was ejected from City Council. The Mayor authored this motion because I posted on Facebook how City Councillors voted on a proposal to freeze city council salaries, and included information that I received regarding from City Human Resources department.

What I posted was the most recent official information available. During the meeting we heard some guesses or alternative math, but they were unsubstantiated. This information shows that that City Council is slated for an estimated salary increase of approximately 2.34 percent in 2019 unless Council directs otherwise.

On December 20, it was confirmed that my information was correct and that, with the latest Statistics Canada data, Council is set to receive a 2.37 percent salary increase according to the pay formula.

I'm grateful that the facts have validated my position.

This pending Council pay increase is the reason I initially asked that Council accept a 5% pay reduction, to show strong leadership during union negotiations and tough economic times. No other council member seconded my proposal. Then I asked for the vote on the salary freeze to be postponed until Council had all of the information. This was also not supported by any other member of City Council.

Therefore, I voted in favour of a council salary freeze, but it lost in a vote of 9-6.

Now that the final numbers have been released, I remain committed to ensuring the greatest savings for Calgary taxpayers. My focus is on bringing attention to all those who are without jobs and are having a difficult time. City Hall can and must do more with the same.

Council must lead by example as we negotiate with our employee unions and, at minimum, not increase our pay. Calgary City Council is one of the highest paid Councils in Canada and Calgarians continue to face economic hardship. We must lead by example.

My expectation is that City Council and Administration, will do the decent thing, do the right thing, and fully recognize their error.

I look forward to City administration confirming the results of this formula calculation. Once the salary increase is confirmed, my first course of action will be to introduce a proposal to roll back 2019 salary to 2018 levels and place a pay freeze until the next election. I hope my fellow Councillors will support this proposal.
