What is red tape?

cut red tape

Red tape adds time and complication when there often doesn’t need to be any.

There are some procedures, forms, licences, and regulations faced by Calgarians that add to the cost of dealing with government — these are considered red tape. This includes anything obsolete, redundant, wasteful or confusing that diminishes Calgary’s economic and lifestyle competitiveness. Likewise, red tape can be anything that stands in the way of job creation or wastes taxpayer time and money.

Red tape does not include activities that are demonstrably effective and necessary for the protection of public health, safety, and environment.

We need to cut red tape to transform government and reinforce that The City of Calgary is here to problem-solve and facilitate the success of Calgarians. By cutting red tape, we are essentially improving customer service and making it even easier to work with The City, and that makes life better for Calgarians.

Solutions to cutting red tape may be either simple (such as making forms available online) or complicated (such as major systemic change) with improvements happening over the short, medium, and long-term. Often, these solutions will require resources to implement, but the end result will always be a better way of working with The City.
