The City’s building regulation authority within the Development & Building Approvals business unit does not set national or provincial building code legislation, however it is a leading advocate for research into the safety of homes and buildings, particularly with respect to fire safety.
Through building safety codes officers, The City works with other stakeholder groups, including the Calgary Fire Department and industry, to influence changes to codes and legislation that will improve the overall safety of the citizens of Calgary while considering affordability.
Research into the safety of buildings is something that The City actively supports and funds. Calgary is a key municipal partner in projects with the National Research Council and other bodies on topics such as spread-of-fire and home sprinklers, having participated in and/or helped fund the following studies:
- A Survey of Fire Incidents in Single and Two Family Dwellings - A Survey in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Ottawa (Research Report, NRC Institute for Research in Construction, 320; October 31, 2011)
