Hillhurst/Sunnyside is a vibrant and thriving inner city community. The City of Calgary wants to ensure that this established neighbourhood continues to thrive and be a safe/prosperous place for residents and visitors to the area as it grows and re-develops. We are currently working on ways to provide the public with more information on growth and change in their community.
The area redevelopment plan
In 2009, The Hillhurst/Sunnyside Area Redevelopment Plan was amended to reflect the transit oriented development objectives approved by City Council and the input received from the public and stakeholders during the planning process. The objective was to increase the number of residents and jobs in the area while ensuring that new development and re-development would integrate well with the existing community and maintain the ‘village like’ character that is so endearing to residents and citizens alike.
The amended Plan’s vision and guiding principles were developed in consultation with community residents and other stakeholders and provides a vision for residents “to live, work, shop and play without the need for a car” within the context of an established community with a unique and historic identity.
UPDATE: On November 5, 2012, City Planning staff made a presentation to Council to recommend an amendment to the ARP. This change to the ARP would apply to the lands identified as the TOD Study Area in the ARP. The proposed amendment would limit development to the density currently allowed under the existing land use and would allow for additional density to be earned if developers made contributions to a local 'Hillhurst/Sunnyside Park Improvement Fund' or by constructing a portion of or an entire urban design initiative identified in the ARP. The amendment was approved by Council and will be incorporated into the ARP.
