Awards, categories, criteria & requirements

Calgary Heritage Authority Lion Awards 2010
Categories

The Lion Awards recognize contributions in the following six categories:

Resource conservation

Recognizes the rehabilitation or restoration of a heritage building, structure or feature.

Award criteria

  • Alignment with best practices in heritage conservation.
  • Quality of workmanship and the retention of the heritage integrity of the building, structure or feature.

Specific category submission requirements

  • Drawings must be clear and suitable for reproduction. If appropriate, include a site plan, elevations, and relevant details. 
  • Comparative illustrations or photos clearly indicating before and after may be included (maximum of 15).

New building design

Recognizes high quality new design that respects the heritage character of an associated property, immediate context or neighbourhood.

Award criteria

  • Compatibility of new buildings or structures with the heritage character of a streetscape, setting or neighbourhood. 
  • Compatibility of new additions to heritage buildings, in terms of architectural design, scale, form and materials and minimal intervention. 
  • Quality of workmanship.

Specific category submission requirements

  • Describe the contextual issues in the one-page summary. 
  • Drawings must be clear and suitable for reproduction. If appropriate, include a site plan, elevations, and relevant details. 
  • Comparative illustrations or photos clearly indicating before and after may be included (maximum of 15).

Community revitalization

Recognizes the efforts of communities, neighbourhoods or individual contributions to enhance the public realm through heritage-related projects. Streetscapes, public art, special installations, environmental initiatives and a banner programs are examples of this category submissions.

Award criteria

  • Wide community engagement demonstrating how the community at large was involved and supported the improvements. 
  • Positive contribution to the public realm. 
  • Innovation and uniqueness of the project. 
  • Promotes the heritage of community.  

Landscape

Recognizes cultural landscape design, the maintenance and restoration of heritage landscape features, conservation of landscape resources, and contributions that supports heritage landscape conservation.

Award criteria

  • Alignment with best practices in heritage conservation.
  • Conservation of original landscape elements, both built and natural.
  • Compatibility of landscape design with the historic character of the neighbourhood.
  • Evidence of using historic documentation where applicable.

Specific category submission requirements

  • Address the contextual issues in the one-page summary. 
  • Drawings must be clear and suitable for reproduction. If appropriate, include a site plan, elevations, and relevant details. 
  • Comparative illustrations or photos clearly indicating before and after may be included (maximum of 15).

Advocacy and awareness

Recognizes the efforts of individuals or groups (including youth groups) advocating or promoting the preservation of a heritage site or increasing public awareness of heritage issues through publication, education or exhibit or digital means. 

Award criteria

  • Contribution of the awareness of historic resources and heritage issues.
  • Overall impact of these efforts.

Specific category submission requirements

  • Include appropriate illustrative material including related photographs, media coverage and other material (maximum of 15). 
  • Submit one copy of any corresponding publications, programs or exhibition material.

Heritage trades people/crafts people

Recognizes the skills of an individual or team in trades and craft professions in heritage conservation.

Award criteria

  • Contribution to sound conservation of historic resources.
  • Knowledge of the historic fabric.

Specific category submission requirements

  • A brief description of how the individual or each team member contributed to the project, their training, and their contribution to other heritage-related projects, if applicable.
  • List of completed projects with images (maximum of 15 images).
  • Include appropriate illustrative material, including related photographs, media coverage and other collateral.
