Digital Message Signs Project

We're reviewing the Land Use Bylaw rules for digital message signs and the restrictions when visible from Deerfoot Trail. We may also look at the Transportation Association of Canada road safety assessment guidelines (2015).

A review of these rules and safety assessment guidelines could result in opportunities for spacing changes, size standards and visibility from Deerfoot Trail. This review will have to balance the hierarchy of on-premise signs with the safety of motorists and digital opportunities.

Current status

On July 27, 2017 the Calgary Planning Commission (CPC) recommended that Council approve the proposed Land Use Bylaw amendments for digital message signs. Calgary Planning Commission meetings are now available on video. Click here for a direct link to the July 27, 2017 meeting; digital message signs (item 5.03) starts around the two hour and eleven minute mark.

Council considered digital message signs at a public hearing on Sept. 11, 2017. The agenda for the meeting was posted online on September 7, 2017. Anyone interested in digital message signs is encouraged to speak directly to Council to provide information on how the proposed amendments will impact you or your business. Please view  Communicating with Calgary City Council and its Committees for information on what to expect at the meeting. Letters may be submitted to Councillors or the City Clerk for distribution to Council prior to Aug. 31, 2017.

Digital message signs have a digital display (electronic screens, television, computer video monitors, etc.) and still text (not full motion video or the appearance of animation or movement).

They generally advertise events, activities or services offered and are often used by places of worship, recreational centres and schools. Digital message signs must be notice posted, if they are adjacent to a home.
