About the strategy
The City of Calgary has developed this comprehensive strategy to improve the public spaces around City Hall, Olympic Plaza and the new Central Library. These important landmarks are all located within Calgary’s Civic District, which is bounded by 10th Avenue S in the south, Centre Street to the west, 5th Avenue S to the north and 4th Street E to the east.
The Civic District Public Realm Strategy:
- Establishs a common vision for the future of this area.
- Guides future redevelopment and enhancement initiatives to create great public spaces and better connect people and places.
- Identifies a range of improvement opportunities and helps prioritize City of Calgary infrastructure investment in the district.
Why was this strategy developed?
City Council requested a strategy in order to build a guiding comprehensive vision for independent initiatives planned or under construction in the Civic District including the new Central Library, the National Music Centre and the redevelopment of East Village.
Similarly, this strategy would consider the plans or ambitions of existing civic destinations, such as City Hall, Olympic Plaza, Calgary Tower, Bow Valley College, Glenbow Museum, Arts Commons, and the TELUS Convention Centre. to better connect with each other.
Two rounds of citizen engagement supported the development of the Civic District Public Realm Strategy.
Round One: Refining the vision and providing ideas to improve the district (January 23 to February 7, 2015)
Project information sessions were held at various Civic District destinations to inform citizens about the project and determine what is working well and what can be improved in the Civic District.
Round Two: Presenting draft Civic District Public Realm Strategy (July, 2015)
Information sessions were held at various Civic District destinations to present the draft Civic District Public Realm Strategy.
