Digital Message Signs Project

Overview

We're reviewing the Land Use Bylaw rules for digital message signs and the restrictions when visible from Deerfoot Trail. We may also look at the Transportation Association of Canada road safety assessment guidelines (2015).

A review of these rules and safety assessment guidelines could result in opportunities for spacing changes, size standards and visibility from Deerfoot Trail. This review will have to balance the hierarchy of on-premise signs with the safety of motorists and digital opportunities.

Background

Digital message signs have a digital display (electronic screens, television, computer video monitors, etc.) and still text (not full motion video or the appearance of animation or movement).

They generally advertise events, activities or services offered and are often used by places of worship, recreational centres and schools. Digital message signs must be notice posted, if they are adjacent to a home.

Customer and community involvement

Two invite-only meetings are tentatively scheduled for May 16 and 25, 2017 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. If you are interested in attending, please email Loretta Sequeira.
