Municipal Development Plan and Calgary Transportation Plan review

The City is reviewing its Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Calgary Transportation Plan (CTP). The MDP and CTP are The City’s long-range land use and transportation plans that look 60 years into the future, when Calgary’s population is expected to reach over two million people. The Plans help shape how the communities we live and work in grow, develop and evolve over time.

Calgary’s population has doubled over the past 30 years and is expected to double again over the next 30. This requires thinking about how to make our communities sustainable and affordable, with a transportation network that is safe and reliable, to continue to meet the needs of Calgarians in the future.

The MDP and CTP are living documents. The review is an opportunity for us to check-in on our long-range plans to see what’s working well and what needs to be updated or changed. It also allows us to adapt to and incorporate new technologies and trends.

Background

Approved in 2009, the MDP and CTP strive to create an environment where The City can provide services that Calgarians desire, in a way that is financially sustainable, while protecting our natural environment and supporting a prosperous economy.

The MDP and CTP are outcomes of a citizen-engagement process called Plan It Calgary. From 2006 to 2009, over 6,000 Calgarians participated to help shape the vision for creating land use and transportation plans for our city.

The goal of Plan It Calgary was to set out a long-term direction for sustainable growth that would accommodate another 1.3 million people over the next 60 years.
