Special event and festival permits

Whether you are planning an indoor or outdoor event,  locating it on City or private property, opening the event to the public or keeping it private, the following resources and links will help you determine the permits, approvals and information you will need.

The City of Calgary has put a Festival and Event Guide  together for your convenience and offers a number of event planning resources for public or private functions.

Events on City land

If your event has one or more of the following criteria, you will need to work with The City’s Events Services Team  through an Event Opportunity form:
  1. 645 sq. ft. of tenting or more (i.e. more than six 10’ x 10’ tents)
  2. Liquor
  3. Pyrotechnics or open flame
  4. Road closure larger than one block

If your event does not include any of these criteria, you can apply directly to book any of the following City sites:

Events on private land

City permits may be required even if your event is to be held on your own residential or commercially-licensed property. It’s always best to check land use bylaws for limitations of use on your proposed location.

We have listed some of the most common permits required for special events below, and encourage you to connect with the municipal department associated with your planned activity.

Additional considerations

If your event will include liquor or food service, you must connect with the appropriate provincial regulator to determine what licensing applications or notification forms are required.

Other permits may be required for your event. For more information, please see pages 7-12 of the Festival and Event guide.
