Back lane paving

2019 Backlane Paving
Local Improvement Projects

Proposed backlane paving local improvement projects are being reviewed by Council on March 18, 2019. Only Council-approved projects will be built during the 2019 construction season.

All affected residents will receive a letter in the mail notifying them of Council's decision regarding their proposed project. Letters should be received by April 1, 2019.

Construction schedule: An initial construction schedule will be available in early May.

Most citizen-initiated local improvements are for back lane paving. To avoid unnecessary repairs to new asphalt, The City will not initiate petitions to pave lanes that:

  1. will be excavated within a few years to replace a utility line,
  2. were excavated within the last two years,
  3. were constructed within the last six years.

The City does not pave over new excavations because they can take years to settle. In particular, new lanes can take a long time to settle because they are usually excavated more than once for utility line installation.

The approximate cost per property owner to pave the lane is:

  • 6.1 metre wide lane for a 15.24 metre wide property:
$4,657 lump sum or $412 per year for 15 years.
  • 8.0 metre wide lane for a 15.24 metre wide property:
$6,033 lump sum or $533 per year for 15 years.
  • 9.14 metre wide lane for a 15.24 metre wide property:
$6,033 lump sum or $533 per year for 15 years.
