Backlane alley paving

Most citizen-initiated local improvements are for backlane paving. To avoid unnecessary repairs to new asphalt, The City wll not initiate petitions to pave lanes that:

  1. will be excavated within a few years to replace a utility line,
  2. were excavated within the last two years,
  3. were constructed within the last six years.

The City does not pave over new excavations because they can take years to settle. In particular, new lanes can take a long time to settle because they are usually excavated more than once for utility line installation.

The approximate cost per property owner to pave the lane in 2015 was:

  • 6.1 metre wide lane for a 15.24 metre wide property:
$4,657 lump sum or $412 per year for 15 years.
  • 8.0 metre wide lane for a 15.24 metre wide property:
$6,033 lump sum or $533 per year for 15 years.
  • 9.14 metre wide lane for a 15.24 metre wide property:
$6,033 lump sum or $533 per year for 15 years.
