The Snow Route parking ban program supports snow plowing operations by removing vehicles from the streets, allowing crews to clear snow from Calgary roads more efficiently and effectively. Parking will be temporarily restricted on designated “Snow Routes” for up to 72 hours following a declaration of a Snow Event by The City. Snow Events may be declared when approximately five centimetres or more of snow has accumulated on city streets.

Snow Routes are located on major roadways, collector roads and most bus routes. Snow Routes can be identified throughout the city by blue signs with a white snowflake icon. Watch for these signs in your community. A detailed
online interactive map showing all Snow Routes is available. The City will declare when Snow Route parking bans are in effect and citizens will be asked to remove their vehicles from the affected roads to facilitate plowing.
Benefits of Snow Routes
The parking ban will allow plows to clear the snow from curb to curb safely and efficiently, and will eliminate several problems, such as snow building up beside parked cars and being moved back onto the road, as well as reduced road widths due to snow accumulating next to parked cars.
Snow Route parking restrictions are expected to reduce plowing times. They will not only help The City remove snow from major traffic routes more effectively, but also allow crews to start snow clearing residential routes faster. This will benefit all Calgarians and will help make travel safer for everyone this winter.

How Snow Routes work
- Snow Routes include major roadways, collector roads and most bus routes.
- The City will issue an advisory when a Snow Event is expected in the forecast. This advisory is meant to serve as a warning that parking may soon be banned on designated Snow Routes. Vehicles should be moved as quickly as possible following this advisory.
- The City may declare a Snow Event if approximately five centimetres or more of snow accumulates on the road. Snow Route parking bans will be in effect for up to 72 hours or until The City declares they have been lifted. Declarations are made through local radio and TV stations, and will be publicized on this webpage and through other communications channels (see below for more information).
- Snow clearing operations will be ongoing. Parked cars must be moved from Snow Routes immediately when a Snow Event is declared. Vehicles that remain parked on these roads during the ban are subject to enforcement, up to and including a parking tag and tow. Check the FAQ page for more information.

Snow Route exemptions
On-Street Handicap Zones – no parking bans
On-street handicap zones located along snow routes will be exempt from the parking ban at all times. Citizens with mobility challenges can apply for a handicap zone in front of their home by following the handicap parking zone and sign process.
Downtown and Business Revitalization Zones – parking bans 9 p.m.- 6 a.m.
Some Snow Routes located in downtown or in Business Revitalization Zones will only have parking bans between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. when a Snow Event is declared. Check out the map for further information.

The City will use a variety of channels to inform Calgarians when Snow Route parking restrictions are in effect and when they are lifted.

- Call 311 and listen to the automated message.
- Watch the local news or listen to the radio.

**Please Note** If you typically park your vehicle on a Snow Route and are going out of town or leaving your car on the street for an extended period of time this winter, you should find alternate parking before you go. The 
Province’s Traffic Safety Act also bans vehicles from parking in one spot for over 72 hours. If snowfalls are anticipated, residents should try to be proactive and remove their vehicles from the street until the snow has been cleared off the road.
