Calgary Roads

Operations, maintenance and upgrades

To Keep Calgarians on the move, the Calgary Transportation department's Roads business unit maintains, rehabilitates, and reconstructs the city's current roadways and bridges, manages traffic and parking Infrastructure. Road maintenance and construction programs include pothole repair, street cleaning, snow and ice control, surface overlay paving and sidewalk repair. Local improvement services are offered to residents who want to invest in alley paving or sidewalk replacement, driveway crossing or street lighting upgrades.

Divisions of the Roads Business Unit strive to provide a safe, effective and well maintained road system for all modes of travel with a commitment to excellence, innovation, and environmental sustainability.

Current programs on Calgary streets:

Snow Route parking bans
This winter a new Snow Route parking ban program will be introduced to Calgary. The purpose of this program is to support snow plowing operations by removing vehicles from the streets, allowing crews to clear snow from Calgary roads more efficiently and effectively. Parking will be temporarily restricted on designated “Snow Routes” for 72 hours following a declaration of a Snow Event by The City. Snow Events will be declared when five centimetres or more of snow has accumulated on city streets.

Snow and Ice Control program
Roads sands, salts and plows roads and sidewalks based on a Council-approved priority system. This keeps the greatest number of vehicles moving safely in the shortest period of time. See the road conditions map to help plan your commute when it snows.

Traffic information now
Plan your commuting trip. See the Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS) for traffic cameras and any incidents, closures, roadwork or delays affecting your drive in Calgary.

Traffic innovations at Roads
Whether it’s through real-time traffic updates or solar-powered pedestrian crosswalks, the Roads business unit is constantly looking at better and more efficient ways of operating. Find out more about innovations at roads here.

Taxi hydrant zone parking program
The Transportation Department, with support of the Calgary Fire Department, is implementing parking for taxis at designated fire hydrants for a one year pilot program.

Bridge rehabiliation program
Bridge rehabilitation and maintenance is an important part of Roads operations. Monitoring bridges through regularly scheduled condition assessments keeps bridge engineers informed and provides for maintenance planning activities. See which bridges are currently part of the rehabilitation program.
