17 Avenue S.W. at Sarcee Trail pedestrian crossing relocation

The City constructed a larger pedestrian refuge island in the median between the southbound left turn lanes and the southbound right turn lane at the intersection of Sarcee Trail and 17 Avenue S.W. (southbound Sarcee Trail off ramp).

Relocation of pedestrian crossing will reduce conflict with southbound right turning vehicles

Pedestrians now cross 17 Avenue (north-south) on the west side of the intersection from this median refuge island to the southwest corner of the intersection. Pedestrians are no longer permitted to cross to the northwest corner of the intersection directly from the southwest corner of the intersection.

Relocating the pedestrian crossing to the median between the southbound turn lanes enhances safety for pedestrians by reducing the potential conflict with southbound right turning traffic. This improvement also enhances motorist safety by reducing the risk of rear-end collisions for southbound right turn traffic.

This work was completed in July 2016.
