McKnight Boulevard at 68 Street N.E. intersection

On May 4, 2017 changes to the traffic signal arrows were implemented at the intersection of McKnight Boulevard and 68 Street N.E. as part of the Traffic Operational Improvements program.

Prior to the change, the intersection operated with protected/permitted left turns, this means motorists were able to turn left on a flashing green arrow followed by a solid green display. The traffic signal operation was changed so that the intersection now operates with protected only left turns, this means that motorists are able to turn left on a flashing green arrow, but they are no longer able to turn left on a solid green display.

The intersection of McKnight Boulevard and 68 St N.E. was identified as having a high number of collisions between left turning vehicles and vehicles traveling through the intersection. The City reviewed information available about the collisions and through that review, The City identified that a change in the traffic signal operation from protected/permitted left turn arrows to protected-only left turn arrows would contribute to reducing the number of collisions and improved safety at the intersection.

Traffic conditions at McKnight Boulevard and 68 Street N.E. will be monitored for timing changes to help with the congestion that may result from the protected only left turns.
