Crosswalk painting

Crosswalk painting is an annual City program that involves repainting 8,500 crosswalks and refreshing stencils. This includes painting arrows, yield symbols, stop bars, and bike symbols that have become faded during the winter months. This helps make the crossing location more visible to both pedestrians and vehicles.

2016 Crosswalk repainting schedule

The crosswalk painting program started in May and is now completed for 2016.

When crosswalks are painted

Crosswalk painting in school zones and residential areas is done during the day (generally Monday – Thursday).

Crosswalk painting on major roads and commercial/industrial areas is done during the night (Monday – Thursday).

Roads are rarely shut down completely to accommodate crosswalk painting, but lane restrictions are typically required to ensure work can be done safely.

What materials are used to mark crosswalks

The City currently uses a low VOC paint on the majority of the painted crosswalks. However, more durable materials have been used in some locations such as 5 Avenue S.W.

The City is actively on the lookout for the most cost effective, durable materials that is in compliance with the Environmental Federal Law.

How weather impacts crosswalk painting

Cold weather does impact the ability of City crews to paint crosswalks. Unfortunately, paint won’t stick to cold roadways, which is why the painting crosswalk program begins in mid-May.

Report faded or missing crosswalk paint

Calgarians can report locations where crosswalks need to be repainted online.

Which crosswalks get painted

Signed crosswalk
Signed crosswalk
Standardized criteria are used to determine when a crosswalk should be painted. This includes traffic and pedestrian volumes, road geometry, mid-block crossing locations, and amenities in the areas, such as schools.

All painted crosswalks are accompanied with crosswalk signs to ensure that the location is visible even if lines are faded or covered with snow in the winter.

Request a warrant study for a new crosswalk by filling out an online service request.

How you can help

The City paints 2,850,530 meters of lane markings every year. Getting this work done is a collaborative effort.

We rely on the co-operation of citizens to drive with caution when City crews are painting crosswalks in their area.
